Postcard from Africa

By Debbie Camelin

I sent email greetings from the tip

of Africa atop Cape Point that steep pristine

parcel of land bounded by mountains

where Indian azure and Atlantic aquamarine

mingled before demarcating ocean boundaries

with scarcely a ceremonial whoosh to be seen

High up here I recalled grade school lessons

of Portuguese explorers and European traders

aboard grand galleons rounding the perilous

Cape of Good Hope as the defiant crusaders

who bended knee to age old empires seeking

riches and spices whether as guests or invaders

But now pervasive binary code wrapped

in virtual addresses and elaborate encoding schemes

replaced mariner’s astrolabe and captain’s compass

with a global net of information streams

connecting me to Canadians on distant coast

Cyber frontier my contemporary meme
