Passages is a website dedicated to fostering, celebrating, prompting, and promoting emerging student writers within the Department of English’s Creative Writing Concentration at Carleton University.

While the emphasis of is on student writing, Passages strives to reach beyond such binaries as student/ professional, university/public, Carleton/ the whole wide world. As such, this site encourages creative writers in all disciplines, departments, and at all levels across the Carleton campus to join in, contribute to, and hopefully find writing inspiration here.

Passages includes writing tips, prompts, and exercises, reading suggestions, a calendar featuring writing-related arts events and forums in and Ottawa, a list of journal calls, contests, and other ways to get published, featured student and professional writers, and information about our inaugural writing contest.

Thanks to Professor Travis DeCook for coming up with “passages,” a name which so perfectly suggests how units of written text move readers into new realms, worlds, and horizons of experience.
